Salty Streams and Safer Streets logo

The way we design, use, and care for the spaces around us—our schools, neighborhoods, roads, and parks—directly influences the health of our watershed. Every sidewalk, parking lot, storm drain, and green space plays a role in how water moves across the landscape and what it carries. In Salty Streams and Safer Streets, students investigate how everyday human decisions shape water quality by examining land use, the built environment, and community maintenance practices.

This unit is grounded in phenomenon-based science teaching. Instead of beginning with abstract concepts or isolated facts, students start with real, observable events in their own communities. These experiences spark curiosity and lead students to ask questions, collect evidence, and figure out how and why systems behave the way they do. Using data and scientific reasoning, students build and revise explanations as they make sense of the world around them.

The anchoring phenomenon for this unit is the rising salinity in freshwater systems, driven by the widespread use of road salt during winter weather. This familiar and necessary practice keeps roads and sidewalks safe, but it also impacts the health of nearby streams. Students can observe chloride spikes, changes in water chemistry, and shifts in freshwater ecosystems. Because road salt use is both visible and locally relevant, it creates a meaningful context for exploring the trade-offs between human safety and environmental health.

Driving Question: How can we balance winter safety with the health of our watershed?

Students investigate this question by exploring how water moves through landscapes and how pollutants enter local waterways. They examine how design choices can either worsen or reduce environmental impacts, and analyze practical strategies—from rain gardens that filter runoff to municipal practices that reduce salt use.

Throughout the unit, students will:

  • Investigate how everyday human choices influence environmental health

  • Observe sustainable design features in local spaces

This eleven-lesson unit concludes with a student-led action project in which learners apply their understanding to design and carry out a real-world solution that benefits their community.

Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE)

Salty Streams and Safer Streets is built around the MWEE framework, which organizes learning around investigation, reflection, and informed action. Each lesson in this unit contributes to one or more of the four MWEE essential elements: Issue Definition, Outdoor Field Experiences, Synthesis and Conclusions, and Environmental Action Projects. What Teachers Should Know Before Starting

This unit is designed as a learning arc, not a set of standalone lessons. Each lesson builds on the previous one by adding evidence, tools, and perspectives that students will revisit. The strength of the unit lies in returning to ideas over time and allowing students to refine their thinking as new information emerges.

This unit prioritizes scientific practices and sensemaking over content coverage. Students analyze data, construct explanations, evaluate trade-offs, and use evidence to support claims. The goal is not memorization, but growth in reasoning and decision-making.

There is no single right answer to the driving question. Balancing winter safety with watershed health involves trade-offs. Students may prioritize different values as they interpret evidence and consider solutions. Productive disagreement and respectful debate are expected outcomes of this work.

Your role is that of a facilitator, not a problem solver. Teachers guide investigations, support discussion, and help students connect evidence to claims. Asking thoughtful questions, highlighting patterns in data, and encouraging reflection often lead to deeper learning than supplying answers.

Outdoor learning does not require special field sites or extensive travel. Field experiences are designed to be flexible and accessible. School grounds, sidewalks, parking lots, storm drains, or nearby green spaces are sufficient for meaningful investigation.

The action project is structured but adaptable. All students should engage in identifying solutions, weighing trade-offs, and selecting an action grounded in evidence. The scale, format, and audience can be adjusted to fit classroom schedules, community contexts, and administrative constraints.

Curriculum kits: Each Salty Streams kit includes enough consumable materials for six classes, with supplies for eight small groups per class.

Each lesson kit is organized and labeled so you can open the bin and start teaching. Kits include all curriculum-specific materials for 8 student groups across 6 class sections. Only a few common items—like play sand, distilled water, and juice—are sourced locally by the teacher.
